Assignment 1: Meet and Greet Your Classmates

Your professor has set up a "Meet and Greet" discussion forum for class introductions. You can read your professor's introduction and that of any classmates who have already introduced themselves. You will make a discussion posting introducing yourself to your classmates. Please feel free to review the first page of the lesson topic before you do or jump right in and introduce yourself.

To post your introduction, you should:

  • Start a new thread
  • Enter a descriptive subject line. This is what you're classmates will see when they first enter the the discussion board area. Be clever. Be serious. Be yourself.
  • In your discussion posting, include:
    • Your name and your location. (You will be surprised at how many different places - and time zones - we live)
    • Current employment or what you want to do. For those already teaching, it will be helpful to include the subject and grade level you teach.
    • Hobbies or interests
    • What you hope to get from this class and your graduate degree.
    • Optional, but desirable: Please attach a digital photo if you have one. Many of your classmates will want to know what you look like. If you're doing something fun, even better!

Replies

Find three people who share some of your interests and reply to each one. This will help you build a relationship with others in the program. After all, the chances are good that you will "see" them in other classes.

Please refer to the participation rubric in the Course Information link. Let's do our best to keep our discussion postings error free.

Grading

Your introduction is worth 5 points and your replies to your classmates are worth another 5 points.

Assignment 2: 3-2-1 Assignment

As you proceed through the content in this lesson, you will explore various areas of the classroom and the course syllabus. Please pay attention to the content of the lesson and the assigned reading in the text book. After you finish reading everything, please compose a posting with the following:

  • 3 things you found out
  • 2 things you found interesting
  • 1 question you still have

By the way, it's alright if you want to ask more than one question or share more than two interesting things.

Please refer to the participation rubric in the Course Information link. As always, let's do our best to keep our discussion postings error free.

Replies

Take a look at what your classmates had to say about what they read. Maybe you'll be able to answer some of their questions. Respond to at least two classmates using the Classroom Conversations rubric to guide you. Come back later to see if anyone posted an answer to your question!

Grading

Your 3-2-1 posting is worth 8 points and your replies to your classmates are worth another 8 points.

Optional Assignment: Scavenger Hunt

For many students, this is the first online class. Often, first-time online students are nervous about learning to navigate in Blackboard. If you'd like to explore the Blackboard in a fun and non-threatening way, please join your professor in a Scavenger Hunt on the Discussion Board. Your instructor has already posted everything you need to know to participate. If you're already familiar with Blackboard - or if you're confident you won't have any trouble, you don't need to participate. This activity is optional.
