EDL 585: Lesson 2 Leadership Strand

Students throughout the MTL program share several common experiences. These common experiences reflect faculty beliefs and philosophies about the essence of the MTL program. One such core experience is to examine the REACH Model for Teacher Leadership. You will do that in this lesson. It lays the foundation for several activities and discussions throughout this course and the entire MTL program.

The REACH Model: Teachers as Leaders by Eunice Meredith

Read Teachers as Leaders [pdf] from the book Leadership Strategies for Teachers by Professor Eunice Meredith at Drake University.

As you read this chapter, take time to jot down your initial thoughts on the Critical Goal Review on page 16. Begin looking for additional information and research on REACH components for which you would like additional information. Return to this from time to time throughout this lesson and the next. The ideas you gather over the next week or two will help you with an assignment in lesson three.

Also, please complete the reflective activity at the end of the chapter: Looking Back/Reaching Forward. Complete it for yourself, as well as for someone you consider a teacher-leader.

For this week's discussion posting, you will share your observations on this exercise. As you create your discussion posting, please draw from the body of the assigned chapter to explain and elaborate your thoughts and ideas. Practice giving credit for ideas that aren't your own.
