EDL 585: Lesson 4 Leadership Strand

In the last lesson, you created a personal vision statement to help you chart your professional and personal life. In this lesson, you will rely on that vision to help you design your program of study for the duration of your time at UIS. Please read the following guidelines to help you design a program of study that satisfies all program requirements. Use your vision statement, along with your personal and professional interests, to design a program of study that will be meaningful to you.

Program Requirements

To complete the MTL program, you must take 40 hours of Master's courses. Of those 40 hours, 20 hours (or five classes) are required of all MTL students. All five must be included in your proposed program of study. Those include:

You can read course descriptions for each of these required courses.

Program Electives

In addition to the required courses, you may select 20 hours of additional courses to complete your program of study. You may choose to take courses from across the range of course offerings, or you may choose to specialize in a particular sub-field of education including technology, the legal environment of education, exceptional student education, or National Board Certification.

Please see the complete list of electives options and descriptions of each course.

Planning Your Program

Completing this program of study during EDL 585 is critical. Once you submit your program of study and it is approved, the MTL Program Coordinator reserves a place for you in the appropriate course during the semesters you specify. However, you should know that UIS is committed to accommodating you should you change your mind at any point throughout the program.

With that in mind, examine the options that are available to you and sketch out a plan to complete the program. Keep in mind that you should only plan on one required course per semeter. You may take more than one course, but only one should be required. The other course can be an elective.

When you are ready to submit your plans, please use the new interactive course planning guide (opens in a new window). You will be prompted for a user name and password. Use the same NetID and password you use for logging in to Blackboard, but with one slight modification. Add uisad\ just before your user name. Note that the direction of the slash is critical. Take a look at the graphic below to get an idea how the login box should look.

Once you complete your submission, you will receive a web page summarizing what you submitted. Please save the file you receive for your records and send a copy to your professor to demonstrate you completed this task. Your professor, or the MTL Program Coordinator, may contact you to let you know if there are any errors in your plans.

What's Next?

The MTL Program Coordinator will use the information you submitted to plan the course schedule to accommodate you and other students interested in our classes. You will have a guaranteed seat in each of the courses you listed for the first month registration is open. If you don't register within the first month, your permission will expire and your place in the class will be given to someone on the waiting list.

Each semester, you will need to contact the MTL program to receive a WPI (With Permission of Instructor) approval to register for your upcoming classes. If you change your mind about the courses you want, you may do so as long as there is an opening in the other class you wish to take.
