Getting Family & Community Involved:
It's as Simple as WWW !

Parents see their role as "guides to good content" rather than as watchdogs for their child's time on the Internet. Help them out by pointing them to high quality content that supports instruction. You can create your own content or point them to other resources. This page is full of ideas and tools you can use.

Creating online lessons

Are you ready to design your own web-based lessons? It's easier than you think. Test drive some of these powerful learning tools.

Filamentality - Free and easy-to-use, Filamentality lets teachers create lessons using a variety of formats, including Subject Samplers, WebQuests, Treasure Hunts, Scrapbooks, or Hotlists. This tool has always been a BIG hit in workshops.

TrackStar - Also free, TrackStar lets teachers organize and annotate a collection of websites to maximally impact student learning. Use the annotation feature to point students to special information or ask thought-provoking questions.

Web Worksheet Wizard - This free tool, created by HPRTEC, lets you post a lesson, worksheet, or class web page. See an example. Project Poster offers similar capabilities for your students.

TeacherWeb - The full TeacherWeb access requires a small fee, but this service offers free space for teachers to create a WebQuest. Be sure to visit the WebQuest sample starter if you think you'd like to give this a try.

Jamie McKenzie's Module Maker - Learn to create your own online modules based on powerful questions. You can create these in a Word document or HTML, though you might want to visit your tech specialist to find out if you can have web server space.

Games and activities

Your students love to play games! Give them some to play and reinforce your instruction at the same time.

PuzzleMaker - Sponsored by Discovery School and free! Create your own crossword puzzles, word searches, math puzzles, cryptograms, or any one of 11 different puzzle types. Also take a look at the Internet Coach's Puzzle Center.

QUIA - Offering 16 types of games and learning activities, including cloze, matching, concentration, Hangman, Battleship, and others! Search the QUIA website for games and puzzles created by others, try it out for 30 days and create activities for your students to use, or sign up for a $50 annual fee to take advantage of all premium features.

The jClicker - This one requires you to have access to some web space, but it was too interesting to omit. You can post a slideshow of pictures. Check out a digital camera from the library and have your students take a field trip right on the school grounds snapping pictures of mathematical relationships (such as angles and shapes) or science studies (bugs or plants), or anything else you or your students can imagine. See a sample.

Snapfish is a way to share photos, too. It's easier to use, free, but requires registration.

Surveys and quizzes

Perhaps you want to offer your students a chance to review before the big test. Maybe you're interested in finding out what they (or their parents) think about something. You might want to give your students a chance to conduct a survey. These are all possible and within budget!

QuizStar - Free and also sponsored by HPRTEC, QuizStar lets you create and administer online quizzes. You can even manage grade reports online. How's that for convenience? Not convinced yet? How about adding media files to spice up your quizzes even more? You can do it all here.

SurveyMonkey - The free version is limited to 10 questions, but those questions can have many parts! You can invite people to take your quiz, allow unlimited responses, limit responses - it's up to you.

QUIA - In addition to the puzzles , games, and classroom web page, QUIA lets you create quizzes and surveys with a variety of different question formats.
