Staying in touch

Parents want to hear from the school about events, activities, assignments, and their child's progress. Teachers can easily use Internet technologies to keep them informed and get them involved.

Free
  • Use a free service such as Yahoo! Groups or Topica to create an email list. Becky recommends an "announce only" email list so you don't need to worry about inappropriate content going out through this mechanism. A variety of options are available to customize this service to your needs. A primary advantage of using a tool such as this is that the service manages members joining, quitting, and bounced messages.
  • Set up a distribution list using your preferred email software. Be sure to put the home addresses in the BCC field to avoid accidental replies to the whole group and to preserve the privacy of the recipients' email addresses. Managing the members and the bounced email addresses will take a toll on your time. I recommend taking a few minutes to register for one of the services listed above, rather than trying to maintain your own distribution list.
