Overview
I am an educator and a lifelong learner. Some call me an educational technologist.
I strongly believe that educational technologists should, first and foremost,
be educators. I try to focus on that primary goal at all times. My quest for
constant improvement drives my efforts in my classroom, in my research, and
in my community.
Teaching Philosophy
- I believe the appropriate use of technology can enhance both teaching and
learning in a variety of ways.
The use of technology can significantly improve communication and collaboration
between and among peers and instructors. For young learners, computer-mediated
communication can bring parents closer to the classroom and foster greater
involvement in their child's education. Technological capabilities allow
demonstrations and simulations not possible with conventional instructional
approaches. The Internet has made resources from across the world available
to my students and I believe it is important to take advantage of those.
Online learning offers the possibility of education and professional development
to those who are unable to attend face-to-face classes due to separation
caused by time and location.
I am proud of the online
class I developed to help teachers become familiar with online learning.
My face-to-face classes and presentations are enhanced by supplementary
websites available to students at all times outside of class (See
an example). I believe this accessibility fosters student engagement
in my classes. I
encourage others to provide similar resources for their students through
presentations and staff development.
- I believe instructional time must allow for students to interact with material,
peers, and the teacher to develop a deeper understanding of the material.
I am convinced learning improves if students are able to transfer and
apply new knowledge to projects and assignments flexible enough that students
can mold them to fit their own contexts and interests. My face-to-face
classes are characterized by lively discussions and activities among small
groups. I encourage students to extend my ideas and suggestions to their
own contexts and to take advantage of group members' expertise to help
them figure out how to apply their new knowledge. In the online environment,
these discussions take place through asynchronous discussion board postings
and draw upon resources from around the world.
- I believe professors, teachers, and instructors must convey high expectations
in order for students to maximize performance.
I have always held high expectations for my students, no matter their ages.
I have found students almost always rise to those expectations - at times
surprising themselves in the process.
- I believe teachers and professors must remain current in their field and
in current events.
Research Philosophy
My research philosophy is simple. I am interested in researching things that
will improve teaching or learning.
Service Philosophy
Service has always been an important part of my life. I determine my areas of service by examining several
criteria:
- the task in front of me is worth championing,
- working on the task will enhance my experience and the experiences of others,
and
- the task is something I believe I can do well.
My service work is limited to to arenas in which all three criteria are met.
